TRAILCARE
Trail Care was recently formed from a group of likeminded people who have been working in the background with DECCW, NPWS and local Councils regarding trail access.
The founding members have been involved with engaging and building relationships with these land managers and other stakeholders since 2001. They have a varied professional backgrounds that include consulting in local and State planning, approvals and policy development. Our volunteer consultants are members of some of the largest Australian and international engineering and environmental consultancies.
Dr Simon Keane, the President of Trail Care, works professionally in planning approvals, detail design and compliance of major state transport infrastructure projects. He regularly represents clients in community meetings during project exhibition and ongoing consultation. He has significant experience in the fields of Sustainability and Noise, and has presented at a number of conferences within each discipline.
Most of us are also members of local clubs and other rider user groups (NoBMoB, MWMtb & IMBA). One of the purposes of Trail Care is to locally facilitate and assist (where required) communication between mountain bike groups, NPWS, Councils, various land managers, community green groups, industry and other user groups.
Some achievements by our members are:
• Briefing with then Deputy Premier and Environment Minister of NSW, Carmel Tebbutt, on Sustainable Mountain Bike Trail Strategies at parliament
• One of our reports (Published on NobMob) was referenced by Mike Baird (current NSW Treasurer and MP for Manly) during a 15 minute address in State Parliament on mountain biking and also by Parks Canada during their policy development
• Liaison with the former DECCW (now OEH) and NPWS to provide local rider input during the development of the Mountain Bike Discussion Paper (https://mountainbiking.discussions.nsw.gov.au/)
• Formal presentation given at Friends of Narrabeen Lagoon Catchment public forum on mountain biking, continued liaison and discussion with FoNLC.
• Facilitating discussion of trails at Red Hill and Oxford Falls with NPWS, National Parks Association, FoNLC, bike shops, clubs, aboriginal community, Warringah and Pittwater Councils.
• Meeting with State Upper House senators to promote mountain biking
Collectively we have donated in excess of $600,000 of free consulting (based on standard charge rates) over the last 3.5 years and have also taken significant time off without pay to meet and engage various stakeholders in NSW.
We would all prefer to spend the time with our family and ride bikes, however the lack of official trails and the justifiable raising of environmental issues by Green Groups, caused by the lack of properly managed trails and official facilities in the region, has led us to become active

ALL Mountain Racing
Australian Mountain Bike Series receives facelift for upcoming season
The 2011/12 season will be split into two, with the cross country riders vying for the ‘All Mountain Cup’ and the downhillers contesting the ‘Gravity Cup’.
Spectators across Australia will have the opportunity to witness the nation’s best riders, with events to be staged in Perth, Canberra, Thredbo, Mount Buller, Adelaide and Newcastle.
Each round will also feature an activity staged in the CBD of each host town to bring spectators closer to the action than ever before.
The new formats will allow for growth in both disciplines, by offering riders the chance to compete in additional events over the weekend.
The All Mountain Cup will include a number of additional elements over the course of each two-day event. Riders will compete in a stage-likeenvironment, in which performance results will be tallied to determine the overall event winner.
In addition to the centrepiece Olympic Cross Country event, other formats such as the cross country eliminator (four-cross for cross country), cross country time trial, cross country enduro (25km to 50km), Super D (downhill cross country) and the return of the short course event will be scheduled over the weekend of competition.
In the Gravity Cup, all downhill classes will now have seeding races on the Saturday, followed by finals on the Sunday.

Manly Warringah MTB Club Social Rides
It's not always about the racing...
Social rides are a great way to meet other riders from the area, and also to be guided through new trails you've never ridden by experienced riders. To keep up to date with all of the latest social riding information (as well as information on upcoming events) then subscribe to the social riders mailing list.
Our social rides are achievable for riders of every ability, and aim to be enjoyable and as the name suggests, social. If you want to race we suggest you see our race calendar. There are three different types of social rides:
•Day rides are at a cruisy pace, with no pressure. Have a chat while you ride, discover new trails, and meet new riding buddies.
•Epic rides are for the more serious social rider. Expect fit and experienced riders, and challenging xc terrain. If you ride regularly, and can maintain a consistent pace for 3 hours plus then an epic is for you. NEW NOTE : All riders must hold a valid MTBA licence and ride a suitable XC or endurance type bike. (Due to previous bad experiences freeride, commuter or big DH bikes will not be allowed.)
•Night rides are pretty self explainatory. Riders will need a minimum 10 watt bar or head mounted lamp (with at least 1.5 hours burn time), rear flashing red light.
SEE CALENDAR FOR SOCIAL RIDE DATES
If you require anymore information or have any suggestions for other rides then please contact our social ride coordinator, FIona Dick at social@mwmtb.com

Narrabeen Lakes trail starting to take shape
The Narrabeen Lagoon Multi-use Trail Project aims to design and construct 2.5km of trail and pedestrian bridge infrastructure between Deep Creek and South Creek. This project will complete the final links of the existing trail network along the foreshores of the northern beaches largest coastal lagoon.
The trail will provide many opportunities for physical recreation to the residents and visitors of the area, improving health and quality of life while at the same time increasing awareness about the environmental and cultural amenities of the lagoon.
To date, Warringah Council has completed the trail through Jamieson Park and Berry Reserve, and Pittwater Council has completed the trail through Billarong Reserve. Both Warringah and Pittwater Councils are working collaboratively to design and construct the final components of the trail with the aim of encouraging a wide range of users and enhancing the existing joint Council interpretive and educational program.
Project Stages
This project is divided into 2 stages:
Stage 1 is from Deep Creek Bridge to Middle Creek Reserve.
Stage 2 is from Middle Creek Reserve to South Creek Reserve.
Stage 2 involves the trail section through the Sydney Academy of Sport and Recreation (Sydney Academy) and the Cromer Golf Club.
Stage 1: Deep Creek Bridge to Middle Creek Reserve
Stage 1 involves the design and construction of trail infrastructure between Deep Creek and Middle Creek Reserve and a new pedestrian bridge at Deep Creek.
Warringah Council is in the process of finalising designs for a trail alongside Wakehurst Parkway within the vegetation adjoining Narrabeen Lagoon. Construction of this section is due for completion in late 2010.
This section of the trail contains threatened species, the potential for buried Aboriginal archaeological material and the ruins of the Never Been Beaten Lime and Cement Works. These ruins are heritage item listed as having local heritage significance in the Warringah Local Environmental Plan 2000.
To ensure the new infrastructure is sensitive to these constraints, Warringah Council has commissioned highly qualified ecological, heritage and design consultants to undertake the necessary studies and assessments. Both councils are working closely with these consultants and the relevant public authorities to design trail and bridge infrastructure which will enable users to appreciate this special environment.
The pedestrian bridge will be adjacent to the southern side of the existing Deep Creek Bridge. Design has commenced and construction is due for completion by 2011. Pittwater Council is Project Managing this component of the trail.
Stage 2 - Middle Creek Reserve to South Creek Reserve
Stage 2 involves improvements to existing parking and visitor facilities at Middle Creek Reserve. It also includes the necessary trail and bridge infrastructure linking through the Sydney Academy and the Cromer Golf Club, The objective of this stage is to provide trail and bridge infrastructure that links the new infrastructure in Stage 1 to the existing trail from South Creek Reserve to Jamieson Park. This stage requires adults to behave like adults and get it done and not a bunch of spoilt children
Progression of this stage was made possible with the NSW Minister for Sport and Recreation’s formal announcement in September 2008, in which Warringah Council gained approval to construct a trail through the Sydney Academy. Since this date, Warringah Council has been in consultation with the relevant public authorities, the Sydney Academy and the Cromer Golf Club to identify stakeholder concerns.
Design for this section of trail is due to commence by early 2010, and Warringah Council is aiming to have this infrastructure built by the end of 2012.
Offical Opening of the Deep Creek Bridge is October 15th.

MOUNTAIN bikers will be welcomed back into some state national parks under a government plan to stop illegal trails being cut.
Construction will start on a series of dedicated tracks in parks around Sydney in the next few weeks, including trails in Garigal National Park and Berowra Valley Regional Park on the north shore, the government has said.
The aim is to end illegal trail blazing, which has led to fines and track closures, and stop conflict between cyclists and conservationists who argue that national parks should be purely wilderness areas.
Critics of mountain biking say a maze of illegal tracks can cause erosion and introduce invasive weeds. The hope is that providing proper trails in safe areas will halt illegal track building.
''It's part of our government's commitment to rethink the way we care for our parks and reserves by finding better, more relevant ways for people to enjoy, appreciate and look after these special places,'' the Environment Minister, Robyn Parker, said.
''It will provide for properly designed, properly rated, purpose-built trails and tracks in parks where it will be most appropriate environmentally.''
Mountain bikers made dozens of submissions and almost 1000 comments on last year's government discussion paper on the issue. ''Sydney has been starved of proper trails for too long,'' Mick Ross, of Australian Mountain Bike magazine and a keen rider, said.
''Making illegal trails has dropped off recently but there is still plenty of bad press about mountain bikers … generally mountain-bike riders are very respectful of the space they are in.''
The National Parks Association of NSW, which has vigorously opposed people building ad hoc trails through the bush, said it would not oppose mountain-bike riding in designated areas if it stopped illegal activity.
The NPWS have closed prominent local MTB trail locations including
-Slippery Dip Trail (oxford Falls)
-Little Moab (Oxford Falls)
-Burnies (Oxford Falls)
-Bah Hi Temple Trail (Mona Vale)
-All Single Track in the Cascades (St ives, Davison & French Forest)
-Moon Rock (Oxford Falls)
-Bantry Bay side of Manly Dam
-Heath Track
-Two Creeks Trail
-All of Gargil National Park Single track is off limits to MTB Riders
NPWS Rangers have will be patroling these closed tracks & will be issuing on the spot $300 fines if you are caught on the riding or building on the track. To anyone thinking of pulling down or damaging the signs, DON'T this stupid and will get MTB ing nowhere and will give MTB er's a bad name.
According to National Rules Mountains Bikes can not use any Single track access, unless otherwise sign posted, penelties do apply. Mountain bikes have full access to fire roads and fire breaks but must follow the MTB code of conduct while using these trails.
Mountain Bike Code Of Conduct
MTB Code of Conduct for Manly Dam-
-Keep to the signposted biking route
-Bike riding on walking tracks is prohibited
-Enter park only from the access points indicated on the map
-Give way to walkers and dismount when approaching groups. In spots the bike trail is shared access.
-Do Not make any new trails, it is Illegal and degrades the park
-Dismount near childerns play area's
-Do not ride around water bars, steps or other stuctures, they stabilise tracks by minimising soil movement
-Keep Speed and Skidding to a minimum
-Always ride on the left on blind corners
-When riding fire breaks behind houses keep to the bush side to minimise grass and erosion damage
-Wash your bike before entering Manly Dam or any bushland reserve as mud carries weed seeds a real threat to bushland
-Observe bike route closures
-After heavy rainfall please refain from using the bike access route until conditions settle.
Although this code of conduct applies for Manly Dam MTB riders should be applying the code of conduct to any location they ride at, for your own safety and the publics safety, remember that by following the code you are setting an example and thus helping to improve the reputation of MTB riders.
