The 29 inch mountain bike ride is different to a 26 incher and it’s good!

Riding with bigger wheels at lower pressures the wheels absorb small bumps and holes in the trail and stick to it like a fly on maple syrup.

A 29 inch mountain bike is actually very similar to long travel dual suspension trail bikes in feel and ride but with the travel of a 26" 100mm dual suspension!

A mountain bike with 29-inch wheels, commonly called a "29er," is a relatively new development in the world of off-road riding. Standard mountain bikes have 26-inch wheels, and since the development of 29ers, are sometimes referred to as "26ers." Off-road cyclists who ride 29ers praise them for offering numerous advantages over 26ers.

Smoother Ride
Champions of the 29-inch mountain bike wheel universally say that bigger wheels translate to a smoother ride, bumps and obstacles are less effective in slowing down larger wheels because they have a decreased angle of attack, meaning objects strike them at a lower point in comparison to the wheel's axle. Because rough terrain doesn't affect the speed of the bike as much as it does for smaller wheels, riders of 29ers perceive a smoother ride. A smoother ride translates to lower energy expenditure, which leads riders to declare that the performance of a hardtail 29er rivals that of a full-suspension 26-inch bike.

Increased Traction
The tires of 29-inch wheels have contact patches that are are larger due to the wheel being 3" bigger, this allows higher and more confident corning and descending speeds! A 29ers larger tires have more forward traction, which helps to keep the front wheel down on steep hill climbs.

Better Stability
29ers are generally heavier than conventional mountain bikes, which contributes to their feeling of stability off-road. This is due to the fact that 29ers have a longer wheelbase and weightier wheels. Heavier wheels give riders a more stable feel during maneuvering.

Less Rolling Resistance
The tires of 29ers have less rolling resistance than smaller tires. On smooth surfaces, larger wheels roll better because their tires experience less deformation and because the larger diameter wheel out rolls a smaller wheel. A recent test though on the Singletrack website author Matt Pacocha wrote about an experiment he conducted, a 29-inch hardtail was the fastest mountain bike compared to a 26-inch hardtail and a 26-inch full-suspension mountain bike he rode on the same terrain and with the same power output.

2012 Avanti Bikes

Daniel and Steve have recently returned from the 2012 Avanti & Scott bike release in Auckland and Avanti had many new products to show off.

New MTB product manager Brent Burrows has been hard at work over the last year and the whole range has had a massive overhaul (as well as a few additions).

So the Vapour 29er is a probably one of the most well thought out bikes seen in a while. It’s actually a pretty good testament to Brent’s love and knowledge of mountain biking. When you see this bike there is no doubt that it was designed by a passionate MTB rider. From the spec’ing of Fox 34s up front to the super stiff custom tube set right through to the 12 mm rear DT Swiss axle.

The Vapour 29er features these nifty little post mounts. The brake bolts do up straight into cool little threaded barrels. So if somehow you managed to thread or overtighten them there’s no issues, just slide in a new barrel. Done.

The rear axle is a DT Swiss 12 mm (made to the x12 Syntace standard) and it really stiffens up the rear end. Avanti’s 12 mm axle is totally serviceable; loosen the pinch bolt and the threaded end of the x12 can be replaced. On top of that the inside of the dropout features a slotted guide for super easy wheel insertion. The dropout again is solid (but not too solid) and if broken can be easily replaced.

Last year’s critically acclaimed Torrent has had a bit of a going over. The rear end remains unchanged but the front end features an entirely new oversized custom tubeset, only sharing last year’s head tube. The new front triangle is lighter and stiffer than previous models, and there’s a bunch of new colourways. Pictured is the top Torrent 3 model.

And the for the first time the ladies get some serious love from the Avanti MTB range. For 2012 there are is few new ladies’ models but the full suspension Motiv was a real head turner. Built around the Vapour/Torrent Tru4 four bar platform the Motiv was developed with input from the Avanti WISE program (kind of like a book club about bikes). It’s a 100 mm travel bike, and as you would expect it’s built with narrower bars and a ladies’ seat as well as lower standover and a shorter reach. It’s a well thought out bike and there are two models in the range, the one pictured being the higher spec’d Motiv 2.

There is an ALL NEW Avanti Inc commuter range that has your name on it. The model features a belt drive and an 11 speed internal Alfine rear gearbox, disc brakes and a low key black on black logo. Stealth.

We wanted to really understand what women wanted, what they liked and what they disliked when it came to cycling. We also wanted to get the inside information that would enable us to develop bikes that would quite simply be better for women to ride. And so we went out and talked to riders. Specifically, female riders.

Women (of course!)
We’ve empowered a group of women who ride different kinds of bikes in different ways to advise us on how we can create a better riding experience for all women. They are the Avanti WISE women. They’re working together with Avanti to improve the cycling experience for all women. They include mums, mountain bikers, road cyclists, triathletes and elite athletes.

Insights
Through focus groups, discussion, demonstration, experimentation and evaluation our group of WISE women have given us numerous insights and inspired us to deliver bikes that provide a superior ride for women. This means high levels of efficiency and comfort.

Science
This is where the knowledge is applied and the technology kicks in. Our bike designers and engineers have taken the insights and ideas, then combined them with their own know-how and intuition. And the output of all that blending, thinking and designing is frames with specific geometry for women. This means they fit women’s bodies just like they should. The frames have been matched with the right components to suit a specific style of riding and cater for some of those specific female differences such as shoulder width, hand size and so on.
